Color Grading AI Photos for E-commerce
Color is a promise. If the sweater looks oatmeal in the photo and charcoal in the parcel, the customer returns it. AI photos make that promise harder to keep, because generators invent lighting and white balance that never existed in your warehouse.
Begin with a reference you trust. Photograph the real product once, in daylight, next to a gray card or a plain white sheet. Treat it as the color target, not as the listing image. Every AI frame should be judged against it, not against the prettiest version the model offered.
Generate on a neutral ground. White or light gray makes color casts obvious. Warm wood and sunset props hide a yellow or magenta shift until the image sits beside your other listings. If you want a lifestyle scene later, grade the product on white first, then rebuild the scene while keeping the product pixels.
Correct in a fixed order. Set white balance so the background is actually neutral. Then match the product hue to the reference: navy that drifted toward purple, wood that went orange, metal that picked up a green reflection. Adjust saturation last. Prompts that say vibrant push saturation too far. Shoppers read that as a filter, and a filter reads as a risk.
Keep one grade preset per category, not per photo. All cotton tees share one curve. All ceramics share another. When each image is graded by eye, the collection looks like five different stores. Name the preset with the category and the date. Do not tweak it mid-catalog unless the real product line changed.
Watch the details grading breaks. Extra contrast crushes navy into black and blows out white stitching. Extra warmth turns silver into brass. If a logo or care label changes enough to be misread, the grade is too strong. Check those spots at full size.
Export in sRGB, the space browsers and marketplaces expect. A wide-gamut file that looks right in your editor will shift on a phone. Open the exported JPEG in daylight before you publish.
Teams that generate and then grade can start from Nano Banana 2.1 and keep the reference photo with the project. It shortens the path from a neutral render to a listing that matches the item in the box.
