A softbox is a large, diffused source. It wraps a product in even light, opens the shadows, and puts a broad highlight on glass or plastic. You can ask an AI image generator online for that look without owning the modifier, but only if you describe the light rather than the gear.

I stopped writing the word softbox as a style label. Models treat it as a vibe and then invent a visible octabox, a boom arm, or a studio the shot never needed. What I want is the result: a large, close, diffused key, a soft shadow edge, and a highlight that is a window of light rather than a pinpoint.

For a bottle or a small device I specify three things. The key is large relative to the product and slightly above and to one side. The shadow on the surface is short and feathered, not a hard cut. The highlight on glossy areas is broad, as if the source were a fabric panel just out of frame. I name the material, because diffusion only reads if the surface can show it: frosted glass, brushed metal, matte ceramic, coated cardboard.

Fill matters as much as the key. A single soft source with no fill looks like a hard beauty light in a dark room. I ask for a dimmer bounce from the opposite side, still soft, so the shadow side keeps detail. I do not ask for a pure white void unless the brief is a catalog cutout. A pale, slightly warm wall keeps the soft character without erasing the room.

References help when the words slip. Reference slots can carry distinct roles: one for product identity, and one, if you have it, for lighting only. A photo of a real soft highlight on a similar material should lend the light shape, with an explicit note that the object in that photo must not be copied.

I check the result at 2K before spending a 4K delivery. I look at the shadow edge, the shape of the highlight, and whether a light stand snuck into frame. If the stand is there, I add “no visible lighting equipment” and regenerate. If the highlight is a dot, the source was described too small or too far away.

A softbox look is a lighting sentence you can reuse. Save the sentence that worked, change only the product, and the next catalog image will not drift back to hard noon sun.
